Jerry O’Reilly
"There Was a Lord Who Lived in This Town" - Early Classic Ballads In The Irish Song Tradition.
...........................................................................................................................................................

The talk focused on a comparison of versions of various ballads collected in Ireland in the last fifty years with the corresponding versions in Francis James Child's 1882 – 1898 collection of 305 ballads - which has been described by some commentators as the "canon" of folk music. Jerry O'Reilly's broad ranging talk included original field recordings, live contributions from members of the project and the singing of Jerry himself.

Some questions Jerry addressed were:
What did Child think of the broadside printing tradition?
What did folk song collector Tom Munnelly think of the version of The Suffolk Miracle published by Child in
his collection?
Why did Bertrand Harris Bronson write to Tom Munnelly and what did he say ?
How many Child ballads have been translated into Irish?
